A free app for the Ulanzi RT02 teleprompter

The RT02 is an affordable universal teleprompter for phones and small tablets. It's designed to work with third-party apps, so Reframely can run it straight from the browser.

Step by step: set up a glass teleprompter rig

  1. Lay the screen under the glass. Put your phone or tablet face up in the tray, under the angled glass. The camera sits behind the glass and films straight through it.
  2. Pick your rig in Reframely. Open the sliders and choose Your rig. Tablet or Phone in a glass rig mirrors the text, so it reads the right way round in the glass.
  3. Turn the brightness all the way up. Beam-splitter glass passes only part of the light, so the reflection is dimmer than the screen. Full brightness and a darker room keep the words crisp.
  4. Check it through the camera. Look at the camera’s screen, not the tablet. If the hood’s edge shows in a wide shot, zoom in a little or widen the side margins. Then pair a clicker or your phone and press play.

About the RT02

Ulanzi lists the RT02 at $49.95, with a clamp for phones 55 to 80 mm wide, room for mini tablets up to 6 inches, and a Bluetooth remote that it describes as working with teleprompter apps such as BestView (Ulanzi). That means the quality of your setup comes down to the app you pick.

Set up the RT02 with Reframely

  1. Mount the phone and open Reframely in its browser. Tap Open prompter.
  2. In the sliders menu choose Your rig → Phone in a glass rig. This mirrors the text and puts the reading line in the middle of the glass, in front of the lens.
  3. Set the brightness to maximum.
  4. Pair the included remote in your phone's Bluetooth settings, then open Clicker setup and press each button to assign it. Or pair a second phone as the remote with the code.

Getting a clean read on a small screen

  • Use fewer words per line: raise the text size until each line holds about four to six words.
  • Write shorter sentences, and split long scripts into sections with # headings so you can jump between them from the remote.
  • Use fit to time to set the speed from the length you need.

Which camera works best with the RT02

  • A phone: mount it behind the glass using the main camera at 1× zoom.
  • A small mirrorless camera: keep the lens short (around 24 to 35mm full-frame equivalent) so the glass and hood fill the frame edge to edge without vignetting.
  • A webcam: clip it behind the glass and read from the phone in the tray.

Reading from a small screen

The RT02 is a compact rig, so you'll be close to it. That's good for eye contact: the closer you are, the smaller the eye movement. Keep text large enough to read comfortably, short sentences, and a slower speed than you'd use on a tablet, around 120 to 140 words a minute.

Travel setup

The RT02's size makes it popular for travel and on-location interviews. Open Reframely on both phones before you leave, so it opens offline later, and practise pairing them on a hotspot with Pair → No internet.

Questions

Which app does the Ulanzi RT02 need?

It works with third-party teleprompter apps rather than one required app. Reframely is free and runs in the phone's browser.

Will the RT02 remote work in a browser?

Many remotes act like a keyboard, which browsers can read. Test yours in Reframely's Clicker setup.
