A free teleprompter app for the Glide Gear TMP 100

The TMP 100 is one of the most recommended tablet teleprompters, but it comes with no teleprompter software. Reframely runs in your tablet's browser, mirrors the text for the glass, and turns your phone into the remote.

0:00 / 0:28 4 steps

Step by step: set up a glass teleprompter rig

  1. Lay the screen under the glass. Put your phone or tablet face up in the tray, under the angled glass. The camera sits behind the glass and films straight through it.
  2. Pick your rig in Reframely. Open the sliders and choose Your rig. Tablet or Phone in a glass rig mirrors the text, so it reads the right way round in the glass.
  3. Turn the brightness all the way up. Beam-splitter glass passes only part of the light, so the reflection is dimmer than the screen. Full brightness and a darker room keep the words crisp.
  4. Check it through the camera. Look at the camera’s screen, not the tablet. If the hood’s edge shows in a wide shot, zoom in a little or widen the side margins. Then pair a clicker or your phone and press play.

What the TMP 100 needs from an app

Buying guides consistently list the missing software as the TMP 100's main drawback: Glide Gear includes no teleprompter app, so you bring your own (Speakflow, Digital Camera World). Whatever you use has to do four things well:

  • Mirror the text. The beam-splitter glass reflects the tablet, so normal text reads backward to you.
  • Put the reading line at the lens. Your camera sits behind the middle of the glass, so the line you read should be near the vertical center, not the top.
  • Stay readable at a distance. Large, bold text with comfortable line spacing.
  • Be controllable from where you stand. Once the tablet is inside the hood, you can't reach it.

Set up the TMP 100 with Reframely

  1. On the tablet that goes in the rig, open Reframely and choose Open prompter. Or use the button on this page, which applies the right settings for you.
  2. Tap the sliders icon, then Your rig → Tablet in a glass rig. That turns on Mirror, moves the reading line to the middle of the screen, and sizes the text for a tablet.
  3. Turn the tablet's brightness all the way up. Beam-splitter glass passes only part of the screen's light to your eyes.
  4. On your phone, open the same address, tap Remote, and type the 7-letter code shown on the tablet (or scan the QR code).
  5. Press play on the phone. A countdown runs, then the script scrolls at your chosen words per minute.

Also works with the TMP 50 and TMP 75

The TMP 50 is sized for phones and mini tablets, and the TMP 75 is built for laptops with webcams (Digital Camera World). Neither includes software either. For a phone in the TMP 50, choose Phone in a glass rig; it uses larger text relative to the screen and narrower margins. On the TMP 75, the script shows on a phone in the front tray, in front of your webcam (Teleprompter.com), so use the same phone preset. See the laptop teleprompter guide.

The larger TMP 750 and the studio-rail TMP 1000 (FrontDesk Review) use the tablet preset; raise the text size for the bigger glass.

Tips from TMP 100 owners and reviewers

  • Use a sturdy tripod. The TMP 100 weighs about 5 lb with a tablet loaded (Markus Hagner Photography).
  • Watch the hood in wide shots. The fabric hood can creep into frame at wide angles; zoom in slightly (Markus Hagner Photography).
  • Check tablet size. It holds devices up to 10.5 × 9.5 inches, so a 12.9-inch iPad Pro won't fit (Speakflow).
  • Mind the hood when closing it. Check that its lower edge isn't hanging in front of the lens, and that the screen lock has clicked shut.

Using a Bluetooth clicker or foot pedal

If you bought a separate clicker or pedal, pair it with the tablet in the tablet's Bluetooth settings, then open Clicker setup in Reframely and press each button to choose what it does. Most clickers act like a small keyboard, so they show up there. Your phone as the remote is usually the steadier option.

Questions

Does Glide Gear make a teleprompter app for the TMP 100?

The TMP 100 doesn't come with teleprompter software, and reviewers list that as its main drawback. Any app that can mirror text works with it; Reframely does that in the browser for free.

Can I use my phone as the remote for the TMP 100?

Yes. Open Reframely on the tablet in the rig and on your phone, tap Remote on the phone, and enter the code from the tablet. Play, pause, speed, text size and section jumps all work from the phone.

Will an iPad work in the TMP 100?

Most iPads up to 11 inches fit. A 12.9-inch iPad Pro doesn't. Reframely runs in Safari on iPad.
