An app for Desview teleprompters
Desview's T3 is often called the best-value teleprompter, but its app is rated poorly. Reframely runs in the browser on the device in your Desview rig and works with the Desview remote or your own phone.
Step by step: set up a glass teleprompter rig
- Lay the screen under the glass. Put your phone or tablet face up in the tray, under the angled glass. The camera sits behind the glass and films straight through it.
- Pick your rig in Reframely. Open the sliders and choose Your rig. Tablet or Phone in a glass rig mirrors the text, so it reads the right way round in the glass.
- Turn the brightness all the way up. Beam-splitter glass passes only part of the light, so the reflection is dimmer than the screen. Full brightness and a darker room keep the words crisp.
- Check it through the camera. Look at the camera’s screen, not the tablet. If the hood’s edge shows in a wide shot, zoom in a little or widen the side margins. Then pair a clicker or your phone and press play.
What Desview owners report
The Desview app on the App Store averages 1.8 out of 5 (App Store). Reviewers describe:
- A remote that stopped adjusting speed or responding to the up and down buttons after an update, while start and stop still worked.
- Being unable to import files or paste copied text.
- Word spacing that changed and made the text hard to read.
A hands-on review of the T3 found the remote worked smoothly with Desview's own app, but warned it may behave differently in other apps (LensVid). Other roundups mention a glitchy app and unclear assembly instructions for the T3, and few font options on the T12S (Markus Hagner Photography).
Set up a Desview T3, T5 or T2
- Mount your phone or tablet (the T3 takes devices under 11 inches) and open Reframely in its browser.
- Tap Open prompter, then the sliders icon, then Your rig. Choose Tablet in a glass rig, or Phone in a glass rig for a phone.
- Turn brightness up fully.
- Pair your remote phone with the code, or pair the Desview clicker (below).
Larger Desview models such as the P17 and T12S use the same tablet preset; raise the text size with A+ for the bigger glass.
Mapping the Desview remote
The T3's remote starts and pauses, moves the text up and down a page, and changes speed (LensVid). Pair it in your device's Bluetooth settings, then open Clicker setup and press each button. Reframely shows what the button sends, and you choose its job, for example Page Down for "forward a few lines" and another button for "faster". If a button shows nothing, the browser can't see it, and your phone remote covers that control instead.
T2, T3 or T5: picking the preset
- T2: a phone rig. Use Phone in a glass rig.
- T3: takes phones and tablets under 11 inches. Use the preset that matches the device you put in it.
- T5 and larger: tablet rigs for longer reading distances; use the tablet preset and larger text.
If the remote only starts and stops
Some Desview remotes behave differently outside their own app. In Clicker setup, press each button and see what arrives; assign the ones that work to play, speed or line jumps. If the speed buttons send nothing, set the speed on screen before you start, or use a phone remote.
Questions
Is there a better app for the Desview T3?
Any app with mirrored text and remote support will run the T3. Reframely is free, runs in the browser, imports Word files and lets you map the remote's buttons.
Why does my Desview remote only start and stop?
Some buttons may send signals that only the Desview app understands. Test them in Reframely's Clicker setup; any button that appears there can be given a job.
Can I use Desview with an iPhone?
Yes. Open Reframely in Safari on the iPhone in the rig and turn on the phone preset.
