A teleprompter app for Moman rigs

Moman's MT12 is a metal glass teleprompter for tablets up to 12.9 inches, sold with a Bluetooth remote and the Moman Prompter app. Reframely is a browser alternative for the tablet or phone in the rig, with no account and nothing to install.

Step by step: set up a glass teleprompter rig

  1. Lay the screen under the glass. Put your phone or tablet face up in the tray, under the angled glass. The camera sits behind the glass and films straight through it.
  2. Pick your rig in Reframely. Open the sliders and choose Your rig. Tablet or Phone in a glass rig mirrors the text, so it reads the right way round in the glass.
  3. Turn the brightness all the way up. Beam-splitter glass passes only part of the light, so the reflection is dimmer than the screen. Full brightness and a darker room keep the words crisp.
  4. Check it through the camera. Look at the camera’s screen, not the tablet. If the hood’s edge shows in a wide shot, zoom in a little or widen the side margins. Then pair a clicker or your phone and press play.

Set up your Moman rig

  1. Mount the rig on a tripod, put the camera behind the glass and close the shroud around the lens.
  2. Clamp your tablet or phone in front of the glass, open Reframely in its browser and tap Open prompter.
  3. Tap the sliders icon and choose Your rig: Tablet in a glass rig for an iPad or Android tablet, or Phone in a glass rig for a phone. The text is mirrored so it reads correctly in the glass.
  4. Turn the screen brightness all the way up, and check from where you'll stand that the edges of the text aren't hidden by the hood.

A 12.9-inch iPad Pro fits

Many tablet rigs top out at 11 inches, but the MT12 takes devices up to 12.9 inches. With a large iPad Pro you can use bigger text and read from further back. Reframely runs in Safari on iPad, and adding it to the Home Screen opens it full screen.

Will the Moman remote work with Reframely?

The remote is sold to pair with the Moman Prompter app. Whether it works elsewhere depends on how it connects. Pair it in your tablet's Bluetooth settings, open Clicker setup in Reframely and press its buttons. If each press shows up, assign it to play, speed or line jumps. If nothing appears, it only talks to Moman's app; use a second phone as the remote instead (Reframely Pro). See teleprompter remote not working.

Using the full 12.9 inches

A large iPad Pro gives you room for larger text, so you can stand further back or frame wider without squinting. Try a size where each line holds about six to eight words, and keep the reading line in front of the lens. On smaller iPads in the same rig, centre the tablet so the reading line still lines up with the camera.

Cameras and lenses

The MT12 fits mirrorless and DSLR cameras with a cloth shroud. Short to standard lenses work best; very wide lenses may see the hood's edges, which you can fix by zooming in slightly.

Questions

Do I have to use the Moman Prompter app?

No. Any teleprompter app that mirrors text works in the MT12. Reframely runs in the browser of the tablet or phone in the rig.

What size iPad fits the Moman MT12?

Moman lists it for phones and tablets up to 12.9 inches, so it takes the 12.9-inch iPad Pro as well as smaller iPads.

Should I pick the tablet or the phone preset?

Pick the one that matches the device in the rig. The phone preset uses larger text for the smaller screen.
