An app for the Datavideo TP-300

The TP-300 is a long-running tablet prompter from a broadcast brand. Its app has aged, and a remote is an optional extra. Reframely gives it a current app and a wireless remote you already own: your phone.

Step by step: set up a glass teleprompter rig

  1. Lay the screen under the glass. Put your phone or tablet face up in the tray, under the angled glass. The camera sits behind the glass and films straight through it.
  2. Pick your rig in Reframely. Open the sliders and choose Your rig. Tablet or Phone in a glass rig mirrors the text, so it reads the right way round in the glass.
  3. Turn the brightness all the way up. Beam-splitter glass passes only part of the light, so the reflection is dimmer than the screen. Full brightness and a darker room keep the words crisp.
  4. Check it through the camera. Look at the camera’s screen, not the tablet. If the hood’s edge shows in a wide shot, zoom in a little or widen the side margins. Then pair a clicker or your phone and press play.

What's changed since the TP-300 came out

  • The app is old. Datavideo's DV Prompter app was last updated in July 2021, according to its store tracking (AppFollow).
  • No remote in the box. Datavideo's WR-500, a wired or wireless hardware remote, is an optional extra (Datavideo).
  • Tablet size: it takes tablets 110 to 210 mm wide, about 4.3 to 8.3 inches (Datavideo).

Run the TP-300 with Reframely

  1. Mount the tablet and open Reframely in its browser, then tap Open prompter.
  2. Choose Your rig → Tablet in a glass rig.
  3. Pair your phone as the remote with the 7-letter code. With Reframely Pro, that replaces the wired remote, with speed, text size and section jumps.
  4. If you have a WR-500 or another Bluetooth clicker, test it in Clicker setup.

No remote? A phone remote or an inexpensive Bluetooth clicker covers play, speed and sections, with nothing extra to buy from Datavideo.

Keeping an older rig in service

Teleprompter glass and hoods don't wear out; software and connectors do. Running the TP-300 with a browser app means it works with whatever tablet you own today, not the ones that were current when the app was last updated.

  • Tablet width. Check your tablet fits the TP-300's clamp range (roughly 4.1 to 7.8 inches wide, per the listing above). Measure across the narrow side if you mount it in landscape.
  • Glass. Clean it with a lens cloth and a little lens cleaner; fingerprints and dust show up as a haze through the camera.
  • Hood. Old hoods can sag. Clip or tape it so it stays clear of the lens's view.

Adding a remote

The TP-300 doesn't come with a remote. Three options, from cheapest up:

  1. A second phone as the remote, with Reframely Pro: play, speed, text size and sections.
  2. An inexpensive Bluetooth presenter clicker, mapped in Clicker setup.
  3. A foot pedal that sends key presses, for hands-free control.
