Use any clicker, foot pedal or Stream Deck
Most teleprompter remotes, presentation clickers and foot pedals act like a small keyboard. Reframely lets you see exactly what each button sends and choose what it does.
Step by step: use a clicker or foot pedal
- Pair it like a keyboard. Most clickers and foot pedals pair in your device’s Bluetooth settings and send key presses, such as Page Down or the arrow keys.
- Open Clicker setup and press a button. In the sliders menu, open Clicker setup and press each button. Reframely shows what it sent; assign it to play, speed or jumping by a few lines.
- Read hands-free. A foot pedal keeps both hands free for a demo or a product. Tap once to pause, again to carry on. Stream Deck keys and MIDI pads work the same way.
Set up your clicker
- Pair the clicker or pedal in your device's Bluetooth settings. You don't need the brand's app.
- Open Reframely, tap the sliders icon, then Clicker and keyboard setup.
- Press a button. Reframely shows what it sent and what it currently does.
- Tap Add key next to an action, then press the button you want for it.
Default keys
| Action | Keys |
|---|---|
| Play / pause | Space Enter B . K, media play/pause |
| Forward a few lines | Page Down ↓ →, next track |
| Back a few lines | Page Up ↑ ←, previous track |
| Faster / slower | = / − |
| Bigger / smaller text | ] / [ |
| Back to start | Home |
| Mirror, voice follow, full screen | M, V, F |
Presentation clickers usually send Page Up and Page Down, so they work as back and forward straight away.
Stream Deck and macro pads
Set a Stream Deck or macro-pad button to send a keystroke, such as Space, and it controls Reframely. You can assign any key to any action.
A clicker on the remote phone
Pair the clicker with the phone in your hand instead of the device in the rig, open the remote, and tap Use a clicker with this phone. The clicker's buttons then control the prompter through the phone.
If a button shows nothing at all, it's sending something browsers can't see, such as volume keys on some phones, or it only talks to its brand's app. See remote not working.
Choosing a clicker
| Type | Good for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Presentation clicker | Talks and courses: sends Page Up / Page Down | Some need a USB receiver, which phones and tablets can't use |
| Bluetooth "selfie" or page-turner remote | Phones and tablets in a rig | Cheap ones sleep quickly; press once before a take |
| Foot pedal | Demos and cooking, hands busy | Pick one that sends key presses, not one tied to a single app |
| Stream Deck or macro pad | Streamers and desk setups | Set each key to send a plain key press |
A sensible button layout
With two buttons, use one for play/pause and one for back a few lines: going back is what you need after a fluffed line. With four or more, add faster, slower and next section. Keep the speed buttons away from play, so you don't press the wrong one mid-sentence.
Questions
Does a foot pedal work with a browser teleprompter?
Most Bluetooth and USB foot pedals send keystrokes, which Reframely can map. Press the pedal in Clicker setup to check.
Will a presentation clicker work?
Usually yes. They send Page Up and Page Down, which Reframely uses for back and forward by default.
