Use your phone as a teleprompter remote
Bundled clickers drop out, sleep or only play and pause. Your phone is already in your hand: pair it with the teleprompter using a 7-letter code and it becomes a full remote, with nothing to install. The phone remote is part of Reframely Pro, from $10 for 7 days.
How pairing works
- Open Reframely on the phone or tablet in your rig and tap Open prompter. It shows a 7-letter code and a QR code.
- On your other phone, open the same address, tap Remote, and type the code, or scan the QR code.
- Within a few seconds the remote says Connected directly or Connected through relays, and the prompter shows Remote or Direct.
The phone remote is part of Reframely Pro: $10 for 7 days or $99 a year, with no auto-renewal. Only the camera device needs Pro; the phone in your hand just opens the page.
No internet? Pair offline
On a shoot with no signal, put both devices on the same Wi-Fi or a phone hotspot. On the camera device, open the pairing sheet and choose No internet, scan the invite with the remote phone, then scan the code the remote shows back. The devices talk directly, with no relay and no internet. Both need to have opened Reframely once before, so it's saved for offline use.
What the remote controls
- Play and pause, with an optional 3 or 5 second countdown.
- Speed in words per minute, text size and mirror.
- Back and forward a few lines, restart, and a scrub bar.
- Jump to any section of your script with one tap.
- The live line being read and the time left.
- Edit the script and send it to the prompter.
- Voice follow on and off.
- A Bluetooth clicker paired with the remote phone, if you prefer buttons.
How the connection works
The two phones first find each other through public Nostr relays, using messages encrypted with a key made from your code. They then open a direct WebRTC connection between the phones, and play, pause and speed changes travel over it, usually arriving in a few tens of milliseconds on the same Wi-Fi. If a network blocks direct connections, as some mobile and office networks do, Reframely keeps using the encrypted relay route, with a short delay of a fraction of a second.
The remote phone needs no account, and no server of ours holds your script. Each code is new per session, and a phone with the wrong code can't read or send anything.
What else the remote can do
- Edit the script from the remote and save it straight to the prompter.
- Jump to a section from a list of the script's # headings.
- Several remotes at once: a presenter and a producer can both have one.
Questions
Is the phone remote free?
The phone remote is part of Reframely Pro: $10 for 7 days or $99 a year, with no auto-renewal. The teleprompter, mirror mode, rig presets, clickers and the OBS output stay free.
Do both phones need the same Wi-Fi?
No. They can be on different networks. On the same Wi-Fi they usually connect directly, which is fastest, and with offline pairing they work on a hotspot with no internet at all.
Do I need to install an app?
No. Both phones use the browser. On iPhone you can add Reframely to the home screen for full-screen use.
Can two people control it?
Yes. Several remotes can join the same code, for example a producer and the presenter.
