Teleprompter remote not working: what to check

Remotes are the most common weak spot in teleprompter kits. Work through these checks in order, then test the remote in your browser to see exactly which buttons get through.

Step by step: use a clicker or foot pedal

  1. Pair it like a keyboard. Most clickers and foot pedals pair in your device’s Bluetooth settings and send key presses, such as Page Down or the arrow keys.
  2. Open Clicker setup and press a button. In the sliders menu, open Clicker setup and press each button. Reframely shows what it sent; assign it to play, speed or jumping by a few lines.
  3. Read hands-free. A foot pedal keeps both hands free for a demo or a product. Tap once to pause, again to carry on. Stream Deck keys and MIDI pads work the same way.

1. Rule out power and pairing

  1. Check batteries and the power switch. Some remotes switch themselves off after a short idle time; one roundup reports this with the Geimrsy kit (Markus Hagner Photography). Press a button to wake it before each take.
  2. Pair it in your device's Bluetooth settings, not only inside an app. If it was paired before, choose Forget this device and pair again.
  3. Connect it to one device at a time. A remote still paired to another phone or tablet may connect there instead.
  4. Look for a mode switch. Some clickers have modes for different systems or for page turning; check the manual and try the keyboard or page-turn mode.

2. Find out what the remote actually sends

Open Clicker setup in Reframely and press each button. It shows the key the browser received, such as Page Down or Space, and lets you assign it to play, speed, line jumps or text size.

  • Every button shows up: assign them and you're done.
  • Some buttons show up: use those, and do the rest from a second phone as the remote.
  • Nothing shows up: the remote is talking only to its brand's app, or sending signals browsers can't see, such as volume keys on some phones. Use your phone as the remote instead.

3. Known quirks by brand

RemoteWhat's been reported
Neewer RT113Sold for the NEEWER Teleprompter app; Android pairing asks for Location Services (Neewer). App users report pairing that doesn't control the script (JustUseApp).
Desview T3 remoteWorks with Desview's app; may behave differently in other apps (LensVid). One user lost speed and up/down after an update (App Store).
Ambitful kitOnly play/pause reported as reliable (Markus Hagner Photography).
SmallRig 3646, LensGo TC7SConnection drops reported in testing and by buyers (Markus Hagner Photography).
Parrot remoteReported to work only with the Parrot app (App Store).

4. iPhone keyboard vanished after pairing?

That's expected: iOS treats the clicker as a keyboard and hides the on-screen one. See how to type with a clicker connected.

5. The fallback that always works

Open Reframely on the device in the rig and on your phone, tap Remote on the phone and enter the code. Your phone becomes the remote, with play, pause, speed, text size, mirror and section jumps, over a direct link when your network allows.

Questions

Why does my teleprompter remote only work in the brand's app?

Some remotes use a connection only their own app understands. If a remote's buttons don't appear in a browser test, no other app will see them either, and a phone remote is the practical replacement.

Do teleprompter remotes work with web apps?

Many do, because they behave like a small keyboard. Test yours in Reframely's Clicker setup before a shoot.

Why does my remote keep turning off?

Many budget remotes sleep after a short idle period to save batteries. Press a button to wake it before recording, or use your phone as the remote.
