How many words is a 1-minute speech?
A 1-minute speech is about 120 to 160 words, or around 140 at an average speaking pace. That's eight to twelve short sentences: room for one idea, told well.
Step by step: fit a script to an exact time
- Paste the script. The editor counts the words you’ll actually say, leaving out # labels and [notes], and shows how long the script runs at your speed.
- Type a target in Fit to. Need it to land at 2:30? Type 2:30 into Fit to and save. Reframely sets the speed for you: here, 165 words a minute.
- Read with the time left in view. The prompter counts down the time left as you read, so you know at a glance whether you’re on schedule.
Words and pages for 1 minute
| Pace | Words | Double-spaced pages | Single-spaced pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow (120 wpm) | 120 | about half | under half |
| Average (140 wpm) | 140 | about half | about half |
| Fast (160 wpm) | 160 | about half | about half |
Pages assume about 250 words to a double-spaced page and 500 to a single-spaced one, in a 12-point font. They're a rough guide; the word count is what matters. For other lengths, use the speech length calculator.
What a minute is for
- Introducing yourself in an interview, a networking round or the first meeting of a class.
- An elevator pitch for a product, a project or yourself.
- A short video: a Reel, a Short or a TikTok, where a fast pace near 160 words a minute is normal.
- A quick toast at a dinner or a leaving do.
A structure that fits
- Hook, one sentence. A surprising fact, a question, or the result you're promising.
- One point, with one example. Six to eight sentences. A second point won't fit; save it.
- The close, one or two sentences. What you want them to remember or do.
Ready-made one-minute scripts to start from: tell me about yourself, introduce yourself on video and a 60-second product demo.
Tips for short speeches
- Cut the warm-up. "Hi, so, today I wanted to talk about" uses five seconds of sixty.
- Count words, not lines. A paragraph that looks short can run 90 words.
- Pausing matters more than speed. A one-second pause after your hook makes it land.
Check the timing before the day
- Paste your script into Reframely's editor. It shows the word count and read time as you type.
- Type
1:00into Fit to and save. The scroll speed is set so the script ends on time. - Read it once out loud. If the speed feels rushed, the script is too long: cut words rather than reading faster.
A 1-minute example
Here is a self-introduction of about 140 words, which reads in roughly a minute at an average pace:
Hi, I'm Sam. I help small bakeries sell more online. For the last four years I've built simple websites for local shops, and the thing I've learned is that most customers decide in the first ten seconds. So I keep sites fast, clear and easy to order from. Last year one of my clients, a family bakery in our town, doubled their weekend pre-orders after we added a two-click order form. That's the kind of result I love. Right now I'm looking to work with two more food businesses this spring. If that sounds like you, or someone you know, I'd love to talk. You can find me after this session, or send me a message. Thanks for listening.
Notice the shape: who you are, one result with a number, and one clear ask.
