How many words is a 10-minute speech?
A 10-minute speech is about 1,200 to 1,600 words, or around 1,400 at an average speaking pace. At this length the risk isn't too few words but too many: slides, demos and questions eat into the ten minutes.
Step by step: fit a script to an exact time
- Paste the script. The editor counts the words you’ll actually say, leaving out # labels and [notes], and shows how long the script runs at your speed.
- Type a target in Fit to. Need it to land at 2:30? Type 2:30 into Fit to and save. Reframely sets the speed for you: here, 165 words a minute.
- Read with the time left in view. The prompter counts down the time left as you read, so you know at a glance whether you’re on schedule.
Words and pages for 10 minutes
| Pace | Words | Double-spaced pages | Single-spaced pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slow (120 wpm) | 1,200 | about 5 | about 2½ |
| Average (140 wpm) | 1,400 | about 5½ | about 3 |
| Fast (160 wpm) | 1,600 | about 6½ | about 3 |
Pages assume about 250 words to a double-spaced page and 500 to a single-spaced one, in a 12-point font. They're a rough guide; the word count is what matters. For other lengths, use the speech length calculator.
Budget for everything that isn't speech
A ten-minute slot rarely means ten minutes of talking. Take off the time for:
- Slides: a second or two each to change and let people look. Twelve slides can take 20 to 30 seconds.
- A demo or a video: its full running time, plus setup.
- Questions: if they come out of your slot, agree how many minutes beforehand.
With slides and no demo, about 1,100 to 1,300 words of script is a safer target than 1,400.
A plan for ten minutes
| Part | Time | Words |
|---|---|---|
| Opening and why it matters | 1:00 | about 140 |
| Three main sections | 2:30 each | about 350 each |
| Summary and what to do next | 1:00 | about 140 |
| Spare time for slides, pauses and overrun | 0:30 | none |
When ten minutes is the brief
- A conference breakout or a short session at an internal event.
- A team or client presentation with slides.
- A pitch with a product demo.
- A webinar module or a course lesson.
Keeping your place for ten minutes
At this length a steady scroll can drift ahead or behind as you stop to point at a slide. Two things help in Reframely: a clicker or foot pedal to move on when you're ready, or voice follow, which scrolls as you speak and waits while you pause.
Check the timing before the day
- Paste your script into Reframely's editor. It shows the word count and read time as you type.
- Type
10:00into Fit to and save. The scroll speed is set so the script ends on time. - Read it once out loud. If the speed feels rushed, the script is too long: cut words rather than reading faster.
