A free teleprompter for Mac

Reframely runs in the browser on any MacBook, iMac or Mac mini, with nothing to install from the App Store. Put the text under the camera for recordings and calls, or send it to a second screen or a prompter.

Step by step: read under your webcam

  1. Choose Laptop or desktop webcam. This preset puts a narrow column of text right under the camera, with the reading line near the top, so your eyes stay close to the lens.
  2. Keep it narrow and close to the lens. The shorter the distance between the words and the camera, the more it looks like you’re talking to the viewer. Keep the text small enough to read without leaning in.
  3. Run it beside your call or recorder. Zoom, Meet, Teams, OBS or QuickTime keep running underneath. Control the scroll with the keyboard, a clicker, a Stream Deck or your phone.

Read under the MacBook camera

  1. Open Reframely in Safari, Chrome or Edge and start the prompter.
  2. Choose Your rig → Laptop or desktop webcam. The text becomes a narrow column with the reading line at the top, right under the camera.
  3. Make the window narrow and drag it to the top centre of the screen, under the camera, while your recording or call app runs.
  4. Press Space to play and pause, the arrow keys to move by a line, and = and − for speed.

Keep it in the Dock

On macOS Sonoma or later, open Reframely in Safari and choose File → Add to Dock. It opens in its own window like an app, which is easier to keep beside Zoom or QuickTime (Apple). After your first visit it also opens offline.

Using your iPhone as the camera

With Continuity Camera, a Mac on macOS Ventura or later can use an iPhone on iOS 16 or later as its webcam; you pick the iPhone in your video app's camera menu (Apple). Mount the iPhone at the top of the Mac's display and keep Reframely's reading line just under it, so your eyes stay near the lens.

What works on a Mac

  • Voice follow in Safari and Chrome, with Reframely Pro. Allow the microphone when asked.
  • Imports from Word, Pages (export as Word first), text, Markdown and RTF.
  • The send-to-Reframely bookmark, to send text from any page, such as a Google Doc, to the prompter. See the bookmarklet.
  • Clickers, foot pedals and Stream Deck that send key presses.

A tidy Mac setup for recording

  1. Put Reframely in its own window (from the Dock, if you added it) and choose the webcam preset.
  2. Open QuickTime, Photo Booth, OBS or your call app, and arrange it so the Reframely column sits just under the camera, above that window.
  3. Turn on automatic hiding for the Dock (System Settings → Desktop & Dock) so nothing pops up near your eye line.
  4. Control the scroll from the keyboard, or pair your iPhone as the remote and keep your hands out of shot.

Stage Manager and full screen

Stage Manager can shuffle windows around when you click between apps; turn it off for recording if the prompter keeps moving. Full screen (F) suits an external prompter display, but for reading under the built-in camera a narrow window is better than a full-screen column.

Questions

Is there a free teleprompter for Mac?

Reframely's teleprompter is free in Safari, Chrome and Edge on a Mac, with no watermark and nothing to install.

Can I read a script while recording on a MacBook?

Yes. Keep Reframely in a narrow window under the camera while QuickTime, Photo Booth, Zoom or OBS records.

Does it work on Apple silicon and Intel Macs?

Yes. It runs in the browser, so the chip doesn't matter.
